Teenager v The System
A memoir by Alex Mercer
I was a teenager when I took on four institutions over four complaints. Some worked out. Some didn’t.
About the book
Teenager v The System follows four complaints I took on myself as a teenager, against a district council, a bank, a town council and a county council.
A Land Charges outage at the district council was holding up my family’s house move. Complaining got the searches moving faster. The bank gave me wrong information about rewards eligibility, so I took it to the Financial Ombudsman. The town council never gave me the win I was after. The county council dispute is still open, and so is the Ombudsman’s decision. Both are saved for book two.
The last chapter covers how I go about a complaint, start to finish.
The podcast
I Was 16 When: The True Cases from Teenager V The System, hosted by Alex Mercer.
At sixteen, I took on councils, banks and a system that wasn’t built for teenagers. I fought back anyway. Each episode is one real case from the book, told in audio.

About Alex
Alex Mercer writes about what happens when an ordinary person complains properly. Teenager v The System is the first book, and a second is on the way. The “I Was 16 When…” series on YouTube covers the cases one at a time.
